Add words to iOS Dictionary
(Originally posted on 2014-08-20)
iOS doesn’t give you an opportunity to add words to the dictionary. When it comes across a word it doesn’t know, it is quite happy to give you a red wiggle-shaped line under it, but when you select the word it doesn’t give you the option to add the new word to the dictionary, just choose between the words it thinks are the accurately spelled alternatives and in some cases it refuses to suggest a replacement because it can’t find any.
So how do you add words to the dictionary? This is bizarre. I know. Create a new contact in your Contacts app. Add the words you want the OS to remember as names. You can add as many as you want. Now, these words you added will not have the red wiggle shaped line under it and the iOS has learned some new words.
I used “aadd” as the first name on this contact since I wanted it show up first on the list in Contacts.
Bizarre. But it works.
